Advancing oral health through education, research, and patient care

The Indiana University School of Dentistry has been advancing oral health in the state and beyond since 1879, when it was founded as the Indiana Dental College. Over the past 145 years, we’ve become a national leader in preparing oral health professionals, conducting innovative research that has an impact on patients and the profession, and providing patient-centered care.

We’re located on the IU Indianapolis campus in downtown Indianapolis, in close proximity to the IU School of Medicine, the IU School of Nursing, the IU Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, several major hospitals, and the Roudebush VA Medical Center.

Discover our research

Researchers at the School of Dentistry played a key role in one of the most significant public health advancements in human history: the development of the first fluoride toothpaste. Today School of Dentistry researchers are carrying on that legacy of innovation as they make strides in areas such as cariology, dental informatics, and bone and tissue engineering.

Dr. Dominique Galli’s 30-year career with Indiana University is coming to a close, effective May 31, 2026, when she retires. During her tenure, she has made significant contributions to the IU School of Dentistry (IUSD) and the campus community, most notably in research, leadership, and teaching. The impact of her career, however, may be best defined by her role as a trusted mentor and advisor, and the enduring influence of those she’s helped along the way.

The driving force behind every school is the students, and Associate Dean of Education and Academic Affairs Dr. Laura Romito has kept Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) true to that mission since her appointment in 2022. Along with education and academic affairs, her office has grown to encompass admissions and enrollment management, student affairs, and financial services.
